Rangers bolster their ECHL roster

Published by Dish under Patrick Division, Transactions

He can’t skate.  He doesn’t hit.  He has the scoring touch of Bob Probert.  The best part of his game is his ability to elbow opposing forwards.  Yet for some reason, the Charlotte Checkers are gonna be stuck with Huge Specimen Hugh Jessiman this year.  I know it sounds harsh, but the kid the Rangers took 12th overall in 2003 when they could’ve had Zach Parise, Ryan Getzlaf, or heck, even Nick Tarnasky (287th overall), has been nothing short of a huge specimen disappointment.  Why they would even waste money to re-sign him completely blows my mind.  But heck, the Rangers are great at overpaying for 2nd line, above average, complimentary players and making them attempt to play top line hockey, i.e. Bobby Holik, Chris Drury.  So why not give a kid whose only shot at wearing a Ranger jersey came on draft day a new deal?  Terms were not disclosed, so I’m guessing they gave him a 5 year $25 million deal.

Julia’s Name is Gonna be Julia Gulia

Published by Dish under Patrick Division, Transactions

The Devils have signed the hockey version of Frank Stallone.  That’s right, 27 year old Fedor Fedorov, the player so nice he was drafted twice, is headed to New Jersey.  First of all, who names their kid Fedor if their last name is Fedorov?  Fedor Tyutin is one thing, but Fedor Fedorov?  Were the parents so busy with Sergei that they couldn’t come up with a proper name for the kid?  Anyway, in 18 NHL games, he has 2 assists and 14 penalty minutes.  He wears number 81, which continues the Fedorov family tradition of wearing the same number as your player rating on EA’s NHL series.  Oh, happy day in Newark, and probably at some point, Lowell.

Fear does not exist in this dojo, does it?

Published by Dish under Transactions

Well, if that dojo is Madison Square Garden, apparently the answer is “No Sensei!”  The Rangers dealt Ryan Hollweg to the Make Believes Maple Leafs for a 5th round pick Toronto had previously acquired from Pittsburgh in the Hal Gill trade.  After the jump, my thoughts.

Everything old is new again

First off, let me start by saying, I’m back in a limited capacity right now.  The Dish family has expanded the franchise and this little bundle of joy will not survive without my participation.  On most days, this website will.  That being said, after the jump, my assessment of the Devils offseason.   Continue Reading »

Dueling Sabres

Published by BuffaSlug under Hockey, Transactions

When Brian Campbell’s agent, Larry Kelly, informed the Buffalo News that his client was playing his last game as a Sabre on Monday, it was only a question of where the two-time All Star defenceman would end up at, and what was coming back in return. Less than 12 hours later, it turned out to be San Jose for RW Steve Bernier and a 1st round draft pick. Many Sabres fans were outraged that we could have gotten a lot more for a player such as Soupy, but let’s not beat around the bush. It was either get the best deal possible before 3pm or get nothing at all if we couldn’t sign #51 before July 1st. Continue Reading »

Passing the Buck

Published by Hale under Hockey, Transactions

The Ottawa Senators threw a curve ball to the league yesterday firing head coach John Paddock and replacing him with General Manager Bryan Murray.  This was another head scratching move by a Canadian team in as many days and begs to ask the question; is it Johnny’s fault that NO ONE on this team can stop a puck?

Capital Gains

Published by Dish under Hockey, Transactions

Time to play the game everyone plays this time of year.  That’s right, it’s trade deadline winners and losers.  It’s pretty simple, after the jump, we’ll assess most of the contenders and any team we felt won or lost on this, the day of the NHL’s trade deadline.  More after the leap.
