The Caps trail the Rangers, Flyers, and Bruins by three points with three games to play for the eighth and final playoff spot. However, they trail the Hurricanes in their division by two points. This race couldn’t be any tighter. Take a look at how this is going to shape up. The Capitals and Hurricanes play Tuesday night. Then, they both play Tampa, then Florida to close out their seasons. Carolina will play Tampa the night after they play Washington. Then, on Thursday, the Caps will get their shot at Tampa as Tampa plays their second game in two nights. The Caps will then play their second game in two nights on Friday as they get the Panthers. Finally, the Canes, after a day off, will get the Panthers on Saturday as the Panthers play two in two days. Incredible drama if you ask me. One final note of interest: The Rangers, Bruins, and Flyers are still very much in danger of missing the playoffs. If the Caps and Canes play a three point game on Tuesday, they could very well knock one of those three teams out. Should be a great last week.

The Florida Panthers are just 3 points out of the final playoff spot in the East after handing the Rangers their first regulation loss in more than a month, 3-2 on Friday night. The Panthers have won 6 straight games and are only five points out of the 3rd seed in the East (love that Southeast division). Former Islander great Olli Jokinen has scored just once during the win streak and just 2 in the last 10. If they want to return to the playoffs for the first time since 2000 they need him to get going.

No seriously. The East is tighter than you think. The Capitals, if they win their game-in-hand on Carolina, would be three points behind the Hurricanes. After the jump, how tight is it? Glad you asked…

Obviously, the playoffs are broken down by conference record, with only the division winners guaranteed a spot. However, we here at MartysBetter.com have decided to break things down by division, analyzing each team with a prediction as to what they’ll do down the final stretch, and whether or not they’ll make the playoffs. Finally, I’ll give my prediction as to how far each team can go in the playoffs. Today, we head for warmer climes to the Southleasteast Division.
