UFA Feeding Frenzy

Published by BuffaSlug under Hockey, Uncategorized

A year ago, NHL Free Agency kicked off with a flurry of signings, highlighted by the Buffalo Sabres losing co-captains Daniel Briere to the Flyers & Chris Drury to the Rangers, who also nabbed Scott Gomez from the Devils.  This year should see about the same amount of names flying off the board come 12pm EST today, with the Penguins’ Marian Hossa and Sharks’ Brian Campbell leading the way for big money contracts.  Stay tuned later today for my thoughts of the day one transactions for all 30 teams.

Hasek calls it a career…no, really! He means it this time!

Published by Dish under Hockey

Turns out the Dominatrixor is finally calling it a career.  What I find amusing, is that apparently Dom wants to retire after winning the Cup.  Really?  After “winning” the Cup, Dom?  The way I see it, in 2002, the Red Wings won in spite of you.  Sure, you put up good numbers, but just like Roger Clemens, you needed to go to a team that would’ve won without you anyway, just to win it.  Then, this year, you almost sunk the ship that was the Red Wings, only to see Chris Osgood guide the Wings to the Cup.  Yep, time to call it a career, Dom.  Time to call it a career.

What Will Darcy Do?

Every year, Sabres fans ask this same question when it’s time for Darcy Regier’s to conduct year end player interviews and determine the organization’s course of action. Since the lockout ended, the very same fans become alienated with the team’s inability to keep prime talent and signing one-hit wonders to long term deals. Somebody tell me how locking up RFA Maxim Afinogenov to a 3 year deal was more important than UFA Jay McKee to a 4 year deal back in 2006. Granted, McKee hasn’t been the same player since he departed the Queen City, but neither has Afinogenov. Even so, not many former Sabres find success after leaving Buffalo.

Just take the damn trophy!

Above, is Scott Stevens with the Prince of Wales Trophy in 2003.  For those wondering, Ducks captain Paul Kariya chose not to touch the Campbell Bowl.  How’d that turn out?  Some quick thoughts after the jump.

Capitals sign Karl Alzner

Published by Hale under Hockey

The Caps have signed their 2007 First Round pick to a 3 year deal.  The fifth pick in the 07 draft should step in and be a valuable asset to a team that is a few dman away from being a serious cup contender
