Hats off to the Red Wings!!!
Congrats to the Detroit Red Wings on bringing home the ultimate prize in sports Lord Stanley’s Cup. It was a great series for the league and for the sport and after the jump I will examine how this all went down.
We here at Marty’s better aren’t ones to toot our own horns; HOWEVER we had this series right on the money. If you look back at our predictions (please do) you will find that Dish and I were both preaching the same gospel.
Many of the experts were picking the upstart pens; and now they all have to tell us how that were not ready for primetime, that they were not expereinced enough. I call Bull Sh*T!!! The Pens didn’t lose because they were intimated; they lost because they were simply not as good of a team.
The Red Wings were the defintion of a team effort. They had no clear cut choice for the Conn Smythe because this wasn’t about the name on the back.. it was about the logo on the front. With that being said Henrik Zetterberg was a great choice. Before the playoffs I liked him as a player. That has now exploaded into a full blown man crush (call me!) He has quickly developed from one of the most lethal snipers in the game to maybe its’ most complete player. The best example of this was during Game 6 when Crosby was clearly changing and heading back to the bench when Zetterberg was on the ice.
The Red Wings don’t have that 100+ plus point player; they don’t have the have the glitz or glamour. They are a complete team. With Zetterberg and Datsyuk they have two superstar 2-way players who can play during any situation. They have a great core of defenseman including one of the greatest of all time (are there any questions for mr. stanley.) They also have 6 to 8 forwards who can score 15 to 28 goals a year creating great balance in scoring.
At the end of the day the Wings were simply better. This is not to slight the Pens in any way as they had a great season and if they can manage the cap they should have there chance to shine in the spotlight. But this was Detroits’ time, it was a time for the league’s premiere team to help showcase the sport and they did just that. The ratings were great and the league got a chance to sell it sport to the masses and the ratings show this intrest.
Phew!! What a season and for us at marty’s better we will not be done. Dish will be returning soon as he is a proud papa. I will be getting married soon and we be off to mexico and away from the site for most of June. But marty’s better will be here all summer bringing you all the news that is hockey. From the draft, to free agent signings we will be here. But until then hats off to the Wings and here’s to drinking from Lord Stanley.
