Collectors Corner: 07/08 Upper Deck Series 2 Box Break
Welcome to the first installment of Hale’s Collectors Corner. Today we will breakdown a hobby classic; Upper Deck Series 2. Since returning from the lockout Upper Deck Series 2 has been known as a great product featuring some of the hottest rookie cards in the league as well as the added bonus of Upper Deck Victory inserts cards featuring an added 30 plus rookie cards there were not available in the original release of UD Victory.
This is the first 07/08 product to feature all players in there new Reebok jerseys. Upper Deck has been criticized heavily for taking their sweet time to finally unveil the edge jerseys but the wait is certainly worth it. The photography in this set is gorgeous and might be Upper Deck’s best effort to date. The colors pop on these cards and they really did a nice job capturing the players at work. Here is a look at some of the base cards in the set and you can judge for yourself.

I will stop with the critique and finally get to the goods. Here’s what we pulled from a standard hobby box of UD Series 2.
Young Guns: (6) Jiri Tlusty, Greg Moore, Petri Kontiola, Zach Stortini, Chris Connor and Jonathan Sigalet
Victory Update Rookies: (12) James Sheppard, Sam Gagner, Nick Foligno, Brian Elliott, Ville Koistinen, Matt Moulson, Denis Tolpeko, Lukas Kaspar, Matt Niskanen, Stefan Meyer, Matt Keetley and Martin Hanzal
Victory Update (12)
UD Game Jersey: (1) Brian Rafalski UD Rookie Materials: (1) Bobby Ryan Stars in the Making: (2) Drew Stafford, Alexander Semin Clutch Performers: (1) Jaromir Jagr Top Picks: (1) Ilya Kovalchuk Hometown Heroes: (2) Daniel Briere, Alexander Radulov
All right that’s what this box produced. The jewel of the box is certainly the Jiri Tlusty rookie card as he has show to be a blue chip prospect. Also, we did really well with the victory updates pulling rookies of Gagner, Sheppard, Foligno and Hanzal. The Bobby Ryan jersey pull was quite nice and the other inserts yielded some nice names and pretty good looking cards.
This product continues to be a safe investment for rookie hunters while yielding some very nice memorabilia and unique pulls. You really do get your bang for the buck; 6 young gun rookies, 12 victory rookies and 2 jersey cards is very good for the $60 box price. When it is all said and done Upper Deck Series 2 is a winner plain and simple. It gets the Hale seal of approval and is a must buy for those collecting this year’s crop of rookies.
